Tapestry Weaving
Tapestry weaving covers a wide range of techniques, materials, and dimensions. It can produce two-dimensional images with the illusion of depth; it can produce three-dimensional weavings with textured surfaces. Design can be geometric or asymmetric, one-sided or reversible. At Firewatch Weavers, we offer both "European" style techniques (developed for wall hangings, these
are techniques which usually work with opposing wefts, which allow skips across the back, and may use weft not
at right angles to the warp) and Navajo style (developed originally for for blankets and, later, for rugs, this
style usually uses wefts which move in the same direction and which produce a four-selvedge, reversible weaving).
Best of all is the weaving which combines elements of each technique, to produce a truly unique creation. We employ several types of tapestry loom: the tabletop Penelope, the Leclerc tapestry loom; the C. Cactus-flower mini, maxi, and tabletop loom (especially good for miniatures), and several Navajo looms with weaving dimensions of 2' x 3' or larger. We also can, of course, help you with your own, whatever that might be. Tapestry classes usually begin with a sampler in the chosen style, and then move on to more complex pieces as the weaver progresses. As with the floor loom classes, tapestry weaving classes are offered in an ongoing format. 6 weeks at a time for $125, all materials included. |
