Handspinning

Unless otherwise noted, each class is four (4) weeks; the tuition is $80.

Beginning Spinning with the Treadle Wheel This course introduces the new student to spinning using a treadle wheel. Students are encouraged to bring their own wheels; a limited number of wheels are available for classroom use. Students will work from processed wool roving but may also bring their own fleece if they wish.
Intermediate Spinning with the Treadle Wheel This course introduces the new student to plying methods, to spinning with fibers other than wool, and to the creation of "designer yarns" - yarns which include multicolor fibers, different yarns plied together, beads, metallics, or other textures and embellishments. Depending on the fibers, a small materials fee may be charged.
Spindle Spinning Spindle wheels differ from treadle wheels in two respects: the wheels are turned with the hand rather than by foot pedals, and the spun yarn is wound onto the spindle in a cone called a "copp". We offer instruction in the drop spindle, the antique Great Wheel (also known as the Walking Wheel), and the Indian charkha, which is used to spin cotton.
